Time Dilation Effects in Physics

Time Dilation Effects in Physics Time dilation is the phenomenon where two objects moving relative to each other (or even just a different intensity of gravitational field from each other) experience different rates of time flow. Relative Velocity Time Dilation The time dilation seen due to relative velocity stems from special relativity. If two observers, Janet and Jim, are moving in opposite directions and as they pass by each other they note that the other persons watch is ticking slower than their own. If Judy were running alongside Janet at the same speed in the same direction, their watches would be ticking at the same rate, while Jim, going in the opposite direction, sees both of them having slower-ticking watches. Time seems to pass slower for the person being observed than for the observer. Gravitational Time Dilation Time dilation due to being at different distances from a gravitational mass is described in the general theory of relativity. The closer you are to a gravitational mass, the slower your clock seems to be ticking to an observer farther from the mass. When a spaceship nears a black hole of extreme mass, observers see time slowing to a crawl for them. These two forms of time dilation combine for a satellite orbiting a planet. On the one hand, their relative velocity to observers on the ground slows time for the satellite. But the farther distance from the planet means time goes faster on the satellite than on the surface of the planet. These effects may cancel each other, but also can mean a lower satellite has slower-running clocks relative to the surface while higher-orbiting satellites have clocks running faster relative to the surface. Time Dilation Examples The effects of time dilation are used often in science fiction stories, dating back to at least the 1930s. One of the earliest and most well-known thought experiments to feature time dilation is the famous Twin Paradox, which demonstrates the curious effects of time dilation at its most extreme. Time dilation becomes most apparent when one of the objects is moving at nearly the speed of light, but it manifests at even slower speeds. Here are just a few ways we know time dilation actually takes place: Clocks in airplanes click at different rates from clocks on the ground.Putting a clock on a mountain (thus elevating it, but keeping it stationary relative to the ground-based clock) results in slightly different rates. The Global Positioning System (GPS) has to adjust for time dilation. Ground-based devices have to communicate with satellites. To work, they have to be programmed to compensate for the time differences based on their speeds and gravitational influences.Certain unstable particles exist for a very brief period of time before decaying, but scientists can observe them as lasting longer  because they are moving so fast that time dilation means the time that the particles experience before decaying is different from the time experienced in the at-rest laboratory that is doing the observations. In 2014, a research team announced the most precise experimental confirmation of this effect yet devised, as described in a Scientific American article. They used a particle accelerat or to confirm that time moves slower for a moving clock than for a stationary one.

Thulium Facts

Thulium Facts Thulium is one of the rarest of the rare earth metals. This silver-gray metals share many common properties with other lanthanides but also displays some unique characteristics. Here is a look at some interesting thulium facts: Although the rare earth elements arent all that rare, they are so-named because they are difficult to extract from their ores and purify. Thulium actually is the least abundant of the rare earths.Thulium metal is soft enough that it can be cut with a knife. Like other rare earths, it is malleable and ductile.Thulium has a silvery appearance. It is fairly stable in air. It reacts slowly in water and more quickly in acids.Swedish chemist Per Teodor Cleve discovered thulium in 1879 from an analysis of the mineral erbia, a source of several rare earth elements.Thulium is named for the early name for Scandinavia- Thule. The principal source of thulium is the mineral monazite, which contains thulium at a concentration of  about 20 parts per million.Thulium is not toxic, although it has no known biological function.Natural thulium consists of one stable isotope, Tm-169. 32 radioactive isotopes of thulium have been produced, with atomic masses ranging from 146 to 177.The most common oxidati on state of thulium is Tm3. This trivalent ion most commonly forms green compounds. When excited, Tm3 emits a strong blue fluorescence. One interesting fact is that this fluorescence, along with red from europium Eu3  and green from terbium Tb3, is used as security markers in Euro banknotes. The fluorescence appears when the notes are held under black or ultraviolet light. Because of its rarity and expense, there are not many uses for thulium and its compounds. However, it is used to dope YAG (yttrium aluminum garnet) lasers, in ceramic magnetic materials, and as a radiation source (after bombardment in a reactor) for portable x-ray equipment. Field_Trip_to_L_auberge_Casino_Resort Lake Charles, Louisiana Essay

Field_Trip_to_L_auberge_Casino_Resort Lake Charles, Louisiana - Essay Example Mr. Kirk also showed us the hotel’s villia sweet room and explained us how the rooms are managed. There are more than 1000 rooms in the hotel and the sweet rooms cost anywhere between $40,000 and $100,000. The tables in the casino had all kinds of games to entertain the guests. I found the resort quite well-equipped and I expected it to be so since this was what we were told in the class. There was every amenity a guest could ask for. Especially, the spa was magnificent. Although the spa was available at a very reasonable rate, yet unfortunately I had too less time to book a massage. I was upon a school trip, so all I could have was little fun around the place. The casino was splendid. I found a variety of cuisines at the restaurants. I would particularly like to recommend the appetizer sampler at the Jack Daniels restaurant to anyone planning to go there. Since the weather was very cold, so I could not have a swim into the pool, but that is due for next time for sure. One of the aspects of the field trip that I disliked was that in place of a rake, the poker players in the casino were charged $7 for 30 minutes of game at the table. I was surprised because in the class, we were told that the casino offers a variety of games at reasonable prices, but I found many of them unreasonably high. This price was unbelievably higher than most of the best casinos around that I have experienced playing in before. I also noticed that although the rooms were well-furnished and aesthetically decorated, yet the rooms were not kept up nicely. I noticed stains on some pieces of the furniture as well as some portions of the carpet particularly those that were behind the doors. Probably the house-cleaners clean the main areas but leave the corners. Some shaddy looking characters I saw inside the casino caught my attention. However, the workout facility was excellent. This field trip experience was as informative and educative as it was interesting and enjoyable.

Community Problem About Animal Shelter Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Community Problem About Animal Shelter - Essay Example Human house denies that cat several benefits that the animal should be exposed to. Such is the space for giving birth in case of pregnancy. Cats are mostly secretive animals whose abundance of activities are undertaken in secret. Such activities are mating, removal of stool and giving birth. Cats cannot undertake such activities in the presence of people community. Lack of enough space leaves the cat highly fatigued and unable to freely move around. Proper room design and space design for the cat allows for the suitable nutritional meeting of the animal (De, Bairacli, 69).Human house denies that cat several benefits that the animal should be exposed to. Employment Discrimination Essay -- Race Racism Prejudice

Employment Discrimination Discrimination is a very hard barrier to break. To discriminate means to "distinguish between one another; to make a difference in treatment or favor on the basis other then individual merit." Everyone at some point in their life experiences some form of discrimination that might be on the basis of their race, religion, age, or sex. Discrimination can be examined from many different angles. Because of this, I have decided to discuss one type of discrimination, which is employment discrimination. Throughout this paper I will attempt to answer several questions. Such questions are what is employment discrimination and whom does it effect? What could one do if find that they are a victim of discrimination? After answering these questions I will incorporate my own experience on this topic. Employment discrimination occurs when an employee or a group of employees are treated unfairly as compared to others because of their race, age, sex, religion, etc. Employment discrimination usually effects those who are considered the minority. If a company is found guilty of employment discrimination they can be find several hundreds of thousands of dollars. There are 2 forms of unfair treatment that one could experience in his/her workplace. The first form of treatment is done with intent. An example of this form of treatment would be if fellow employees or the employer makes up jokes or slurs about others, which would cause the other party to feel uncomfortable and unwanted in the workplace. The second form of unfair treatment is done a little different. This treatment is done in a sly and tricky way. For example, the employer would assign certain employees jobs that are out of the ordina... ...and asked about the job positions, they were told that they were only looking for a night crew for maintenance. When a black or hispanic person asked about the job positions they were told a different story. They were told that many different positions were open. My friend even over heard a conversation between the 2 people who were doing the hiring, stating that they positions that were open were to only be given to the black or hispanic people. When I heard this I was disgusted. I was upset that I didn't get the job because of my color. As you can see, discrimination is alive and going strong. It is not something that is very easy to solve. It is said that people are prejudged because of their color, age, religion, etc. People should be judged from within not from the outside. It's like that famous saying, "You shouldn't judge a book by its cover."

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Paper Essay

The play A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare is a comedy that follows a short part in four young lover’s lives, Hermia who is in love with Lysander, and Helena who is in love with Demetrius. The plot thickens when Hermia is forced by her father, Egeus, to a loveless marriage with Demetrius. If Hermia chooses not to marry Demetrius, she would be killed, or forced to become a nun. Not being able to wed the women he is in love with Lysander asks Hermia to run off and elope. Helena, who was once engaged to Demetrius, was then left in the cold when Demetrius decided to marry Hermia instead. Attempting to win back Demetrius’ love, Helena tells him of Hermia and Lysander’s plan to elope. This then backfires and Demetrius takes off to chase his â€Å"new love† Hermia. A distort, heart-broken Helena follows after her lost love into the forest. In the forest, King of the fairies, Oberon witnesses an altercation between distressed Helena and a determined Demetrius. â€Å"I love thee not; There for pursue me not†¦Hence get, thee gone and follow me no more. (II.i l.195-201)† Felling sorry for Helena, who was doing nothing but showing how loyal, and devoted to Demetrius she was. Oberon showing empathy for Helena commands the fairy Puck ( also referred to as Robin Goodfellow) to use the flower to make Demetrius fall back in love with Helena. â€Å"A sweet Athenian lady is in love, with a disdainful youth. Anoint his eyes, but do it when the next thing he espies may be the lady. Thou shalt know the man by the Athenian garments he hath on. Affect it with some care that he may prove more found on her than she upon her love†¦ (II.ii l 266-274)† â€Å"Yet marked I where the bolt of Cupid fell. It fell upon a little western flower, Before milk-white, now purple with love’s wound. And maidens call it â€Å"love-in-idleness.†(II.i l 171-175).† The â€Å"love-in-idleness† was an ordinary white flower, mistakenly stuck by Cupid’s arrow, the flower then changed color and received magical powers. The flower obtained the traits’ of Cupid. Drawing its powers from god of love, the flower has the ability to make one fall in love. When the nectar of the flower is placed upon the eyelids of a sleeping or â€Å"idle† man or woman it will have them fall in love with the first creature they see when they awaken. Therefore the flower receiving its mystical name, â€Å"love-in-idleness† comes from how the power is drawn from the flower. Puck sets out to find the one who bares the â€Å"Athenian garments† and stumbles upon Hermia and Lysander. Puck believes he has found the one his master set him out to find and applies the potion to sleeping Lysander. In the mean while Helena is still stumbling through the woods, eventually finding Lysander. â€Å"But who is here? Lysander, on the ground? Dead or asleep? I see no blood, no wound. Lysander, if you live, good sir, awake (II.ii l 106-109)† Helena attempts to wake Lysander in fears that he has died. Due to the potion when Lysander is awakened he has fallen in love with Helena. Helena then believes that this is all a big joke and exits to escape Lysander ridicule, Lysander then follows to attempt to convince her that his love is true. Hermia then awakens from a nightmare to find that her love has gone and declares that she must find him soon or she shall die. Oberon notices that Puck has applied the love potion to the wrong man; he had applied it to Lysander, and not Demetrius. Oberon quickly attempts to remedy the situation, and sends Puck out to find Helena, because Oberon is going to personally place the potion on Demetrius’ eyes. â€Å"About the wood go swifter than the wind, And Helena of Athens look thou find All fancy-sick she is and pale of cheer, With sighs of love, that costs the fresh blood dear. By some illusion see thou bring her here. I’ll charm his eyes against she do appear. (III.ii l 95-100)† Lysander and Helena return to where sleeping Demetrius lies, Demetrius then wakes to see Helena, and now both men are in love with Helena. Helena sees this as yet another mockery of her, and demands to know why they gang up on her. While the men argue over who loves Helena more than the other, Hermia renters. Wondering why Lysander left her alone, he responds by telling her that he is no longer in love with her but with good friend Helena. This then create an argument between friends, Helena is in shock that Hermia would get involved with such trickery. The men, stuck under the flower’s spell are ready to fight to the death for Helena’s hand. â€Å"Thou seest these lovers seek a place to fight. Hie therefore, Robin, overcast the night. The starry welkin cover thou anon With drooping fog as black as Acheron, And lead these testy rivals so astray As one come not within another’s way. Like to Lysander sometime frame thy tongue, Then stir Demetrius up with bitter wrong. And sometime rail thou like Demetrius. And from each other look thou lead them thus, Till o’er their brows death-counterfeiting sleep With leaden legs and batty wings doth creep.† Oberon is determined to fix the wrong doing by their medaling he tells puck to separate and exhaust the men so that they shall sleep yet again. When the men fall asleep Oberon gives Puck a different flower that can remove the spell and set thing right. After the nectar from the second flower is placed on Lysander’s eyelids all is set right and the argument has seemed to be nothing more than a dream. Now all is set right in the world of love, no potions to interfere, and all are back with the ones that they are meant to love. Men who where once enemies are now friends. All four awake in the same spot to start discussing this â€Å"dream† that they all had. All unsure wither they are still asleep, or truly wakened set off to find the Duke and Hermia’s father. As one reads this play, they will noticed that in this tale of mixed love only the males had the potion applied to their eyes. As one starts to wonder why this has happened, many logically theories can be established. But that’s just it, the reason that the men are the only ones who receive the potion is because men love logically. Whereas women love from the heart, and human logic and reason can be easily altered. â€Å"Content with Hermia? No. I do repent The tedious minutes I with her have spent. Not Hermia but Helena I love. Who will not change a raven for a dove? The will of man is by his reason swayed, And reason says you are the worthier maid. (II.ii l 118-123)† A quote take from Lysander after her has had the potion applied to his eyes, and is trying to convince Helena that he â€Å"truly† loves her. Logic plays a huge role in how men of this time think, and â€Å"love.† Demetrius in the beginning of the play is contacted by Hermia’s father, and is promised riches and a rise in social class if he was to marry his daughter. Although he was in love with Helena, as soon as he hears this news he pushes her aside for a new seat in power. Whereas Helena’s reaction to Demetrius leaving her, they take off to the woods to chase after Lysander and Hermia Demetrius does everything in his power to convince Helena he does not love her. Helena spends the entire play attempting to earn Demetrius’ love back. Through all the tears and the insults, Helena never gives up on attempting to get her love back. If a woman did not love from the heart, but rather her mind Helena would have long given up on Demetrius, she would have not chased him for so long. When Lysander was confessing his â€Å"love† to her, a logical lover would have for gotten about Demetrius, and gone with Lysander. But Helena denied Lysander, convinced he still truly loved Hermia, was convinced that this was all a big joke. Helena also proves that woman love from the heart is when she first finds Lysander. â€Å"But who is here? Lysander, on the ground? Dead or asleep? I see no blood, no wound. Lysander, if you live, good sir, awake. (II.ii l 106-109)† In Helena’s mind that a man in love would never leave his love (that he ran away with) unless something as horrible as death has happened. The logical lover (thinker) would just assume that he was sleeping and Hermia wondered off for something, or the two could have gotten in a fight, but never jump right to death. After all said and done in this play logic and love play huge roles. Wither it be to stand beside the one you love, or change who you â€Å"love† for power. Men and Women of this time are very different creatures, just like in modern times. One can argue that love still works the same way, that all a man see’s is beauty, where a woman loves you for you, your inner beauty.

Course Works on International Business Issues and Ethics

International court of justice (ICJ) commonly referred to as world court was set up in 1945 under the United Nations act. It is not the first world court as the name may suggest but it was established as the successor of permanent international court of justice. It deals mainly with international issues such as settling disputes between countries and it uses a constitution that is recognized internationally in carrying out its activities. Initially it was not effective since many countries had not registered and accepted the laws and rules binding to this statute. Currently ICJ is the Supreme Court and all the countries in the world are suppose to be part of the council so that arising disputes can be solved amicably (Schwebel,1987). The court consist of fifteen judges all elected from the council members and on merit. In an event of presenting a case all the judges must be present at every seating so that they can get full knowledge of the case and handle it professionally. When two or more countries have disputes the ICJ gives out a binding ruling to the states that are members. Non members, UN, corporations and individuals are not allowed to witness but once in a while the court may source information from the public groups (Schwebel, 1987). In controversial cases jurisdiction matters a lot and the judges need to be very precise and accurate. Article 36 of the statute act outlines four concepts to be followed during a jurisdiction; the first is that it allows members to take their cases to the ICJ. This is very important because it binds the two countries in dispute and gives the court full authority to settle the dispute in the best ruling possible. The second is that it gives the court the authority over cas es on compromiser clause. Such issues are not so successful since the states may not concur with the judgment and may withdraw their case without questioning. The article also allows the state elective declaration and takes in the courts’ jurisdiction. With the acceptance and involvement by the third world countries this has boost the ICJ authority and confidence in handling disputes (Schwebel, 1987). For all this reasons the ICJ is the supreme authority. They have powers to pass judgment according to their findings and their ruling is final. The cases under ICJ follow a well lied procedure and no short cuts whatsoever while dealing with international cases. The applicant is usually the first to present the case after which the respondent may write a claim whether to accept or reject. If one party rejects the case then the judgment will not proceed but if it’s accepted then the applicant can seek an order permitting the case to continue. This is where the similarity occurs to the US courts. You first need to request the respondent to accept the claim then the case can proceed. Advisory opinion is the role of the court but is restricted to only United Nation agencies. On receiving a dispute the court investigate and decide which state can give those data pertaining the case and can give them authority to present the same. When faced by a difficult situation the advisory opinion are of great help as the over background backup information leading to fair handling of the case (Schwebel, 1987). Reference Schwebel, S.
